The Road to Germany

An honest map of what it actually takes — from Nigeria to a German medical license. No shortcuts. No false timelines.

12 – 36 months depending on your starting point
Phase 1 — Before You Leave
01 Foundation

Verify your university on Anabin

⏱ Do this before anything else

Check if your medical school is recognised by German authorities. This single step determines everything.

02Foundation

Obtain your Nigerian Medical License (MDCN)

⏱ 3 – 12 months

Complete your housemanship and register with MDCN. Germany respects this license.

Phase 2 — Language
03Language

Reach German B2 — General

⏱ 6 – 18 months from zero

Pass the TELC B2 or equivalent. The minimum entry requirement.

04Language

Pass the Fachsprachprüfung (FSP)

⏱ 2 – 6 months preparation

The medical language exam. A clinical thinking test in German that unlocks your license application.

Phase 3 — Licensing
05Licensing

Choose your target Bundesland

⏱ Research: 2 – 4 weeks

Germany has 16 states. Each processes applications differently.

06Licensing

Apply for Berufserlaubnis or Approbation

⏱ 2 – 8 months processing

Submit your documents to the Ärztekammer. Most Nigerian doctors begin with the Berufserlaubnis.

Phase 4 — Employment
07Job Search

Adapt your CV to German standard

⏱ 1 – 2 weeks

A Nigerian CV will not work in Germany. Format and language are entirely different.

08Job Search

Apply to hospitals & secure a contract

⏱ 1 – 4 months

Navigate the hospital application process correctly.

Phase 5 — Arrival & Settlement
09Arrival

Visa & relocation logistics

⏱ 2 – 4 months

With a job offer, your visa pathway becomes clear.

10Arrival

Settle, register & build your life

⏱ First 4 weeks in Germany

Arrival is not the finish line — it's the start of a new chapter.
